David Bordwell, my graduate school mentor and one of the leading figures in academic film studies, joined the conversation about transmedia storytelling the other week with a typically thoughtful and engaging entry that explored the strengths and limits of transmedia as an expansion of the cinematic experience. Personally, I read Bordwell’s analysis as a friendly amendment and generous “shout out” to the work I’ve been doing on this topic, not to mention a timely one since it arrived on the eve of the start of my Transmedia Storytelling and Entertainment class at USC. His greatest contribution here is to raise a series of constructive objections and challenging questions any filmmaker would need to think through before moving their film — mainstream or independent — in a transmedia direction. To keep the conversation on these topics flowing, I thought I would respond to some of Bordwell’s arguments.

La carrera hacia la mayor tajada del mercado del libro digital está al rojo vivo… y el favorito sigue siendo una incógnita.

Como hemos venido viendo, el mercado del libro y la lectura electrónica está sufriendo transformaciones aceleradas. Cada día aparecen posibilidades nuevas (que vienen, como siempre, con sus dificultades y detractotres). Es un camino largo, aún inexplorado, como plantea el artículo, una completa incógnita para actores establecidos en el modelo impreso. ¿Qué depara el futuro? Esa parece ser la pregunta del millón.

In response to Amazon’s filing in opposition to Google’s landmark settlement with publishers and authors, the Authors Guild, one of the parties to the settlement, fired back with a statement on its Web site late yesterday.

Cultura de la lectura electrónica [Audio Update]

El pasado 9 de julio se realizó el mentado panel sobre la “Cultura de la lectura electrónica”, en el marco de Campus Party Colombia 2009. Por espacio de hora y media, Catalina, Natalia, Xpectro, Romero Varón, Jaime A. Rodríguez y yo, estuvimos conversando sobre el futuro de la lectura, del mundo editorial, de la teoría literaria y de los dispositivos.

En ese buen rato, de gratísima compañía, estuvimos conversando de un lado al otro con poco rigor, pero mucha diversión. Como todo en la vida, se recibieron críticas positivas y negativas, pero, afortunadamente, fueron más las positivas. Es por esto que me aliento a compartirles el audio grabado por los pilosos de ALTAIR Libre.

El audio contiene la mayor parte del panel, ya que en los últimos 10 minutos, la transmisión en directo tuvo que dirigirse a la conferencia de John “Maddog” Hall. Cosa completamente comprensible y lógica.

Cultura de la lectura electrónica en Campus Party

El panel de la “lectura electrónica” que propuse para la programación oficial de Campus Party Colombia 2009 ha sido seleccionado. Este será el jueves 9 de julio, de 5 a 7pm. En la justificación decía así:

El 2009 ha sido marcado como el “inicio” de una transformación real (ver acá, acá y acá para otras noticias) dentro de la industria editorial gracias a los dispositivos electrónicos de lectura: Kindle, Sony Reader, COOL-ER, Iliad, etc. La inclusión de este mercado en las ferias del libro más importantes del mundo (Nueva York, por ejemplo) y la resistencia que otras (como Madrid) han hecho plantea una serie de preguntas sobre la industria editorial tradicional, cómo están sucediendo estos cambios, cómo los actores de estas dinámicas lo están tomando y, sobretodo, qué posibilidades reales pueden permitir -o no- estas tecnologías para la difusión del conocimiento y la promoción de lectura.

En general, la intención de este panel, dentro de CP, es conversar un rato sobre el futuro del libro, de la industria editorial, de la industria cultural, la promoción y la difusión de la lectura y el conocimiento, qué posibilidades rentables están siendo posibles y sobretodo, qué impacto a largo plazo puede tener este cambio de formato, que parece ser el preludio a una verdadera revolución del conocimiento y la cultura.

Espero que en los comentarios dejen sus inquietudes, posiciones y demás, para enriquecer este diálogo que se realizará el 9 de julio. Comenten y tomaré nota de sus aportes.
